I am currently coordinating a community of practitioners in-house to implement a survey of all metadata across library, museums, and press descriptions with the goal of a continual assessment cycle that will build in remedial work on existing collections with out-of-date descriptions. It is also our goal to develop a sort of in-house style guide for best practices in a way that can bridge quite a few disparate descriptive ideologies. In my responsibilities as metadata specialist for the NJ/DE Digital Collective, I collect and control a wide variety of incoming data spanning all kinds of cultural heritage repositories. In both cases, persistent questions of ethics, especially around descriptions and classification of people, persist.
