I'm leading a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion subcommittee at ITHAKA devoted to examining our own platform biases--whether caused by search algorithms, contributor-provided metadata, or controlled vocabularies. We have just completed building a search relevance tool that allows users to make their own relevance judgments, with the ability to flag items for bias or other hazards. We are now turning our attention to the biases inherent in our metadata and vocabularies, and finding that negotiating a balance between preserving the historical record--while not condoning harmful content and language--to be challenging.
