Relevant Projects
I'm the Head of Resource Description for the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (SLA) in Washington, D.C. I'm a member of SLA's Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) Team. I'm running a project with my colleague Amanda Landis, collection manager for our new DEAI Collection, to analyze and propose new/edited headings to Library of Congress Subject Headings. This summer, I'll be hosting an intern who will join the project and help us work on inclusive description strategies. I'm also a part of the Smithsonian Institution's Inclusive Descriptive Practices Working Group. I'm an active member of the SLA Wikidata Team, and I'm partnering with my colleague Janet Stanley, branch librarian for the National Museum of African Art, to model out data for African ethnic groups in Wikidata and Wikibase; I will also be joining meetings hosted by the Library of Congress to set up a Wikidata SACO Funnel. I am a member of the National Museum of Natural History's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Advisory Council, and I co-chair their task force on Collections. This group is looking at different ways of describing cultural and biological museum objects, and is investigating the Local Contexts Project, the Biocultural Heritage Labels Project, and is considering a decolonization assessment tool for possible use at the museum.
